The morning anxiety routine.

Being a parent to strong-minded children can very often make getting them ready for a morning an anxious time. Specific items they like to wear are sometimes still in the linen basket from the previous day’s mess-making session. Minds are all too often changed as they huff and sigh their way through most of the perfectly good items in their wardrobe. From overheard conversations at the school gates and conversations with friends, I found the morning anxiety routine was a very common experience amongst the Mums, Dads, and caregivers. Here are some tips and tricks to ease the morning routine.

The Clock is ticking and every second counts.

It is 7.30 am Monday morning and the clock is ticking. There is a too do list as long as my arm but my ultimate goal is to achieve leaving the house at 8.30 am to get the little ones to school at 8.45 am.

The delegation begins.

Event 1: They want a bar of chocolate and a packet of crisps, and I want to give them porridge. With a screwed up face my little one yells, yuck porridge looks like my sick. We negotiate that if they eat the porridge when they come home from school they can have an Ice Cream on the way home. Time 22min. 30sec.

Event 2: They want to know why they have to wash every morning, they hate brushing their teeth, and they hate the taste of toothpaste. I sing and dance my way through the brushing and the washing, but I am just not cutting it. I feel a strop attack is looming. Time 12min. 21 sec.

Event 3: I have laid out clothes the night before in the hope that we will glide through this process, seamlessly but no way, one of them screams “wheres my airplane top”. I begin to sweat, my heart starts to beat a bit faster, my little one’s face starts to turn red, and here we go, meltdown number one. I quickly distract them with a comforter, which happens to be a piece of toweling cloth 20cm x 20cm with a rabbit head attached, I decide the only way out the door and to calm them down is to sew the comforter to their clothing, solution found.
